The Uniform Tyre Quality Grading System (UTQG)

The Uniform Tyre Quality Grading System (UTQG)

The Uniform Tyre Quality Grading System is a set of standards for passenger tyres that measures tyres tread wear and traction

Tread Wear

This grade measures the wear rate of the tyre when tested under controlled conditions. 100 represents the basic quality standard.

  • More than 100 – Better
  • 100 – Baseline
  • Less than 100 – Poor

Tread wear grades are valid only for comparisons within a manufacturer’s product line – not between manufacturers.

Traction

Traction grades represent the tyre’s ability to stop in the wet. The grade is based upon straight line braking tests, not cornering ability.

  • A – Best
  • B – Intermediate
  • C – Acceptable

Temperature

The temperature grades represent the tyre’s resistance to the generation of heat.

  • A - Best
  • B - Intermediate
  • C - Acceptable
